The Andersonville Prison in western Georgia was a Civil War holocaust. My great, great... great grandfather Hugh Kirkwood was one of the almost 14,000 who died here from dysentery or starvation. He and his sons went to war, and only the sons returned. A portion of the gates has been rebuilt from the archaeological evidence.
At one point, almost 30,000 prisoners were confined in the 27 acres bounded by the white stakes in the foreground and background.
The camp's water source became dangerous from the nearby latrines. Prisoners prayed for safe water and during a heavy storm, lighting hit this area and a freshwater spring broke forth!
After we drove off of the beaten path to get to Andersonville, I got to glean a harvested peanut field.
